Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot leaders meet under UN auspices in the UN Protected Area

Greek Cypriot leader Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman met under United Nations auspices in the UN Protected Area, in what the United Nations described as a positive atmosphere. The meeting was reported in the United Nations political affairs roundup of 13 October 2026. The same roundup records that Hanna Tetteh, head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya, was scheduled to brief the Security Council the following morning on political and security developments, and that the Quintet of the United Nations, the European Union, the Arab League, IGAD and the African Union is consulting Sudanese civilian and political groups, including Somoud in Addis Ababa, to prepare an inclusive Sudanese-led political process.

Why it matters for exams: Cyprus is a standing United Nations file, and the UN Protected Area and the Quintet on Sudan are the sort of named mechanisms examiners ask to be matched to their region.
