Nature analysis finds China overtook the United States as the largest spender on research and development on a purchasing power parity basis

A Nature news feature published on 14 October 2026 traces China's rise in science. In 1978 China published fewer than 120 papers in international journals, 0.02 per cent of the global total, according to Elsevier's Scopus. China's overall research and development spending rose roughly 100-fold over three decades and grew by more than 10 per cent a year on average over the past ten years. OECD data show that in 2024 China overtook the United States as the largest gross domestic expenditure on research and development measured at purchasing power parity; at market exchange rates China's spending was about half the United States level in 2024, up from 8 per cent in 2004. China plans to raise research and development expenditure by at least 7 per cent a year through 2030. Basic research took just under 7 per cent of China's research budget in 2024, against 14.4 per cent in the United States, 11.6 per cent in Japan and 14.7 per cent in South Korea; the share reached a record 7.08 per cent in 2025 but missed the previous five-year plan's 8 per cent target. China surpassed the United States in 2023 as the top-ranked country for papers in influential journals, according to the Nature Index, which tracks 178 journals. The feature cautions against reading the purchasing power parity figure as settling the question, because comparing the research and development spending of two countries is complex.

China's papers in 1978: Fewer than 120, or 0.02 per cent of the global total R&D growth, last ten years: More than 10 per cent a year on average Basic research share 2024: Just under 7 per cent (US 14.4, Japan 11.6, South Korea 14.7) Target to 2030: At least 7 per cent growth a year Nature Index journals: 178
Why it matters for exams: Gross domestic expenditure on research and development, purchasing power parity and the Nature Index are three technical ideas an examiner can test through one comparison of countries.

Solar Orbiter traces the origin of magnetic switchbacks in the solar wind to interchange reconnection at the Sun

The European Space Agency reported that its Solar Orbiter spacecraft has traced a magnetic switchback back to its source on the Sun. Switchbacks are S-shaped kinks in the magnetic field carried by the solar wind, the stream of hot charged particles flowing out from the Sun. Solar Orbiter flew through a very large switchback and its Solar Wind Analyser sampled rarely observed particles, a mix of charged oxygen and carbon. The authors say this mix could only form within hot magnetic field loops at the Sun's surface, pointing to a process called interchange reconnection. The spacecraft was roughly halfway between Earth and the Sun when it made the measurements. The team concludes that reconnection appears to form the switchback at the Sun, while waves and turbulence govern its motion after it leaves the Sun. The study, 'On the Coronal Origin of Magnetic Switchbacks in the Solar Wind', was published in Nature Astronomy, led by Jesse T. Coburn of CNRS/LPP in France with Stephanie Yardley of Northumbria University in the United Kingdom among the co-authors. The work used images of the Sun's disc, magnetic field modelling and a new model linking Solar Orbiter's measurements to data from NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory.

Nikon disqualifies the winning Small World in Motion video over artificial intelligence post-processing

Nikon Instruments disqualified the first-place entry in its Nikon Small World in Motion microscopy competition. The video, awarded first place on 15 September 2026, showed hair-like cilia moving in the lungs, described as a super-resolution microscopy sequence of beating airway cilia from a child with primary ciliary dyskinesia. The entrant, Ning Xu, an optical engineer at the National University of Singapore, said his team used an artificial intelligence model in post-processing to enhance the visual presentation of the regions below the cilia. Scientists raised concerns on LinkedIn days after the award, questioning some features as biologically implausible. Competition rules bar artificial-intelligence-generated videos. Nikon said on 25 September that it was investigating and announced the disqualification on 9 October 2026, stating that after re-evaluating the video and supporting materials and consulting the judging panel it found the video did not comply with the rules. Nikon said the decision concerns only the video's eligibility and not the entrant's reputation, scientific contributions or intent. A university spokesperson said Xu entered before joining the university and that the submission is unrelated to his work there.

Eurodoc report finds wide gaps in what first-year doctoral candidates earn across 26 European countries

A report published by Eurodoc, the European Council of Doctoral Candidates and Junior Researchers, a Brussels-based federation representing early-career researchers, examines what first-year doctoral candidates earned in 2024-25 across 26 countries. The report was published in September 2026 and is available as a preprint on Zenodo. Its authors include Pil Maria Saugmann, Norbert Bencze, N. Dengo, A. Żyra and E. Hnátková. The report finds that higher-paying countries mostly use employment-based systems, while lower-paying countries more often fund doctoral candidates through scholarships. Salaries are taxed but may include pension and parental leave benefits, while scholarships are generally tax-exempt but often lack such benefits. The report cites Estonia, where a 2022 reform replaced a stipend of about 8,000 euros, roughly 9,000 US dollars, a year with a guaranteed salary about 2.5 times that amount.

Drug makers take GLP-1 compounds into trials for addiction and psychiatric conditions

A Nature news feature reports that pharmaceutical companies are testing GLP-1 compounds, developed for diabetes and obesity, against addiction and psychiatric conditions. Eli Lilly's brenipatide, a compound related to tirzepatide, is in trials for alcohol-use disorder, with first clinical results presented in September 2026, and is also in trials for tobacco and opioid-use disorder, depression, schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Data presented at the Psych Congress in New Orleans put brenipatide's half-life at 9 to 12 days against 5 to 7 days for other approved GLP-1 medicines. Kariya Pharmaceuticals' KP405 is being studied for Parkinson's disease, and Baseline Therapeutics of San Francisco plans phase III trials of BT-001 for alcohol-use disorder in early 2027. On the academic side, Hendershot and colleagues reported in JAMA Psychiatry in 2025 the first clinical trial of semaglutide in people with alcohol-use disorder, finding reduced cravings and heavy-drinking episodes and lower alcohol consumption in a laboratory test; Klausen and colleagues in The Lancet and Schacht and colleagues in the American Journal of Psychiatry reported similar results in 2026. Semaglutide mimics GLP-1, while tirzepatide mimics both GLP-1 and GIP.

Chinese court sentences three members of a Myanmar-based scam syndicate to death and jails fifty-eight others

The Quanzhou Intermediate People's Court in Fujian province, south-eastern China, announced sentences on 13 October 2026 against members of what it called the Wei family criminal gang, which ran scam compounds in Myanmar. Three members, Wei Huairen, Chen Dawei and Liao Jingfang, were sentenced to death; Wei Huairen was found guilty of several crimes including murder. Three others received life sentences, and fifty-five more were given prison terms ranging from three years and three months to twenty-four years. The crimes included drug trafficking, organised prostitution, illegal casino operations, telecommunications fraud and the murder of at least two Chinese nationals. The court said the operations netted more than 1.8 billion US dollars. State broadcaster CCTV reported that the gang ran fourteen large-scale compounds and lured thousands of Chinese nationals to Myanmar with promises of high wages. The International Organization for Migration estimated in July that scam centres in South-East Asia employ up to 300,000 workers.
