IEA asks member governments to consider speeding up pledged stock releases and extra diesel releases ahead of its Governing Board meeting
11 October 2026
International Energy Agency (IEA) Executive Director Fatih Birol wrote to Member governments on 11 October 2026 about tightening global diesel markets. He asked Members that have not fully delivered their pledged releases under the March 2026 Collective Action to consider whether they can accelerate the remaining releases, prioritising diesel. All Members were asked to assess whether additional diesel releases are needed, and their scale and timing. The IEA Governing Board will review these efforts at its meeting on 15 October. The IEA had agreed in March to release 400 million barrels, Euronews reported. Birol said the IEA could once again demonstrate its capacity to act together.
