Kerala High Court Registry to renumber the CMRL appeal after the Supreme Court sets aside the Division Bench order of Justices K Natarajan and Johnson John

The Kerala High Court Registry is to assign a fresh number to the appeal in the CMRL pay-off case.
Former Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and others had appealed against a Single Bench directive that ordered the registration of FIRs against them.
A Division Bench of Justices K Natarajan and Johnson John had denied leave to appeal.
On 21 October 2026 a two-judge Supreme Court bench set aside that Division Bench order and granted a ten-day stay on investigations under the FIRs registered after the Single Bench order.
The Supreme Court did not rule on the validity of the Enforcement Directorate's Enforcement Case Information Report.
The appeal is expected before a newly constituted Division Bench on Saturday.
Pinarayi Vijayan conveyed that he would not appear before the Enforcement Directorate in Kochi, citing the Supreme Court's interim orders and the ongoing Kerala Legislative Assembly session.

Division Bench judges: Justices K Natarajan and Johnson John Supreme Court stay: Ten days Date of Supreme Court order: 21 October 2026
Why it matters for exams: The route from a Single Bench to a Division Bench and then to the Supreme Court is a standard question on judicial hierarchy.
