Malaysia tells the UN General Assembly that the Security Council veto must be challenged and abolished

Malaysia's Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan delivered the national statement at the General Debate of the 81st UN General Assembly in New York on 26 September.
He said the veto power of the Security Council must be challenged and ultimately abolished.
He said expanding the Council's membership alone will not be enough to resolve its failures.
He urged every General Assembly member to question the use of the veto, especially in cases of crimes against humanity.
He said Resolution 76/262 had already created an accountability channel between the Security Council and the General Assembly.
The Security Council has 15 members, five of them permanent members with the veto.
