Medical board to examine whether expired Remdesivir was given to Nipah patients at Kozhikode, Health Minister tells Assembly

Health Minister K Muraleedharan told the Kerala Assembly on October 29 that a medical board will look into Nipah deaths at Kozhikode Medical College. The question is whether the patients received Remdesivir after its expiry date. The issue was raised by MLA Mathew Kuzhalnadan. The Kerala Medical Services Corporation Limited (KMSCL) last bought the drug on June 3, 2021: 3,000 vials for Rs 42 lakh, expiring on May 30, 2023. The board is led by Dr Aravind, head of the Department of Infectious Diseases. The Directorate of Medical Education and the Directorate of Health Services will collect records of other patients given the drug. The minister said further steps will follow the board's findings.

Why it matters for exams: Nipah, its carrier, the antiviral Remdesivir and the State drug-procurement body KMSCL are common Kerala PSC health and science questions.
