Meghalaya cut its schools from about 14,000 to 11,500 and now spends 3,500 crore rupees of a 30,000 crore rupee budget on education

Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma inaugurated a new Synod College building and Maternal and Child Health facilities in West Khasi Hills, saying education is fundamental to societal progress. He said that over the past eight years the government reduced the number of schools from about 14,000 to 11,500 while expanding higher education institutions. Education receives 3,500 crore rupees, the largest allocation out of an annual state budget of 30,000 crore rupees, and about 400 crore rupees in scholarships was released in the preceding twelve months. He laid foundation stones for a District Institute of Education and Training building costing 12.63 crore rupees, for the West Khasi Hills District Golden Jubilee Garden and for the Sohpian-Nongstoin road project. The long-pending Maternal and Child Health project had been raised at the CM Connect event in Nongstoin in September 2026, and an ambulance donated by IDBI Bank was handed to the Health Department.
