NASA names Stephen Cash director of the Marshall Space Flight Center
17 October 2026
NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman has named Stephen Cash director of the Marshall Space Flight Center at Huntsville, Alabama, in a release issued on 16 October 2026.
The appointment takes effect on Monday, 19 October 2026.
Cash succeeds Rae Ann Meyer, who had been acting centre director since September 2025 and who returns to the post of deputy centre director.
Cash began his NASA career at Marshall in 1982 and spent 34 years with the agency. He managed Marshall's Space Shuttle Propulsion Office and from 2011 until his retirement in 2016 directed its Safety and Mission Assurance Directorate.
He later worked in industry as vice-president for advanced space systems at Axient, and in 2024 was inducted into the Alabama Engineering Hall of Fame.
Marshall was established in 1960, is called NASA's Center of Excellence for propulsion, and has more than 5,000 civil service and contractor employees.
It develops the Space Launch System rocket, manages the Human Landing System Program for Artemis, and developed the Saturn rockets of the Apollo era.
In plain words
SLS Space Launch System — NASA's heavy-lift rocket developed for the Artemis Moon missions.
Artemis Artemis programme — NASA's programme to return astronauts to the Moon and build a sustained presence there.
