Nature study finds waves control where mangroves grow on the world's open coasts

A research paper titled 'Global mangrove distribution on the open coast is controlled by waves' was published in the journal Nature on 30 September 2026. The authors built a mechanistic model using 20 years of wave data across 400 globally distributed coastal sites. The process-driven approach achieved 78.2% accuracy in predicting the presence or absence of mangroves. The model works by identifying windows of opportunity for mangrove establishment in cases for which wave forcing is low.

Why it matters for exams: Mangroves are a standard environment topic, and this paper gives a current, citable finding on what limits their global spread.
