Over a third of Kerala's 3800 flowering plants are endemic, with five endemic genera in Silent Valley-Wayanad
Background
The Kerala Forest Department records that 33.5% of the State's 3800 flowering plants are endemic, which is 22.6% of all such plants in India.
The origins of this flora are traced to Gondwanaland, the ancient supercontinent, and the Nilgiri, Palani and Cardamom ranges show plant similarities with Adam's Peak in Sri Lanka.
Three areas stand out for endemic plants: Agasthyamala, the Anamalai-High Ranges and Silent Valley-Wayanad.
Agasthyamala has nearly 190 endemic plant species, and the Anamalai-High Ranges have three genera found nowhere else.
Silent Valley-Wayanad has five endemic genera, including Silentvalleya.
In plain words
