Social Democrats lead the new Riksdag with 99 of 349 seats after Sweden's general election

Elections were held in Sweden on 13 September 2026 and the seats in the new Riksdag were distributed among eight parties. The Social Democratic Party took 99 seats, the Moderate Party 70, the Sweden Democrats 62, the Left Party 30, the Centre Party 25, the Christian Democrats 22, the Green Party 22 and the Liberal Party 19. The number of seats each party receives is in proportion to the number of votes the party has received in the parliamentary elections. No single party is close to the 175 seats needed for a majority in the 349-member chamber, which is why government formation has run on past the election.

Social Democratic Party: 99 seats Moderate Party: 70 seats Sweden Democrats: 62 seats Total seats: 349
Why it matters for exams: Seat tables from a proportional system are asked directly, and this one explains the deadlock that followed in Sweden.
