The mission Kerala's Scheduled Caste housing money used to flow through, before the new Thanath scheme
Background
Kerala's new Thanath housing scheme for Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe families, whose applications open on 1 November, changes the route that housing money for these groups takes.
Until now Scheduled Caste and Scheduled Tribe housing assistance moved mainly through LIFE Mission, the State's umbrella housing programme for the homeless.
The Scheduled Caste department's figures show LIFE Mission spent ₹757.47 crore on Scheduled Caste housing over the past eight years.
They also show that ₹120 crore transferred in 2024-25 and ₹105 crore in 2025-26 came back unspent at the end of the year.
Thanath is the department's own scheme, with administrative sanction held and released by the department rather than routed through the mission.
LIFE Mission continues as Kerala's general housing programme for families without a house.
