The two chairs that preside over the Kerala Legislative Assembly, and who sits in them
Background
This background goes with the all-India conference of Public Accounts Committee chairpersons being hosted this week at the Kerala Legislative Assembly, where both presiding officers of the House took part.
Thiruvanchoor Radhakrishnan is the Speaker of the Kerala Legislature. He represents the Kottayam constituency, was born on 26 December 1949 and holds BA and LLB degrees.
Shanimol Osman is the Deputy Speaker. She represents the Aroor constituency and belongs to the Indian National Congress.
The Speaker presides over sittings of the House, rules on points of order and names the members of its committees.
The Deputy Speaker presides when the Speaker is not in the chair.
The Legislature's own website lists both offices with their holders, their constituencies and their office contacts in the Assembly building.
The Assembly's business records also keep a separate list of resolutions moved for the removal of a Speaker, which shows that the office can be vacated only by the House itself.
In plain words
Point of order Point of order — An objection raised in the House that the rules of procedure are not being followed.
