Tura Medical College has 37 of the 97 teaching faculty the National Medical Commission wants for 50 MBBS seats

The Health and Family Welfare Department of Meghalaya released on 30 September 2026, by No. Health.91/2025/59, a review of operationalising Tura Medical College and strengthening Tura Civil Hospital infrastructure.
Only 37 teaching faculty have been mapped as on date, against the 97 that the National Medical Commission requires for an annual intake of 50 MBBS seats.
The effort has run for more than a year, with repeated exercises to identify willing and qualified in-service doctors, three rounds of advertisements, and consultations with doctors in Tura on the shortage of specialists.
The review recommends completing and commissioning the 150-bedded and 80-bedded blocks under construction on the Civil Hospital, Tura campus, so that patients can use them sooner.
That would add to the bed capacity of Tura Civil Hospital, which is to serve as the teaching hospital for the college.

Teaching faculty mapped: 37 Faculty the NMC requires: 97 Annual intake proposed: 50 MBBS seats Blocks under construction: 150-bedded and 80-bedded Rounds of advertisement: Three
Why it matters for exams: The faculty norms of the National Medical Commission and the gap between sanctioned seats and available teachers are a live policy question in medical education.
