Two revenue divisions, 157 revenue villages and 88 village panchayats: how Palakkad is administered
Background
The Ottapalam-Cherpulassery road in Palakkad has missed another completion deadline, which puts the district's administrative map back in view. Palakkad was set up as an administrative unit on 1 January 1957, with Palakkad Town as its headquarters. It was carved out of six taluks: Palakkad, Perinthalmanna, Ponnani, Ottapalam, Alathur and Chittur. Mannarkkad was created later, after Malappuram district was formed, and Pattambi was created in 2013 by splitting Ottapalam. The district today has 2 revenue divisions, 157 revenue villages, 7 municipalities, 13 block panchayats and 88 village panchayats. It is one of Kerala's main granaries, has an agriculture-based economy and has no coastline.
