Vice Admiral Rommel Supangan takes over as the 31st Commandant of the Philippine Coast Guard

Vice Admiral Rommel Agsaullo Supangan assumed leadership of the Philippine Coast Guard as its 31st Commandant on Monday, succeeding Admiral Ronnie Gil Gavan. President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr., joined by Department of Transportation Acting Secretary Giovanni Lopez, led the change of command and retirement ceremony at South Harbor in Port Area, Manila. The President conferred the Presidential Legion of Honor on Gavan. Supangan previously served as Commander of the Coast Guard Marine Environmental Protection Command and is a member of the Philippine Military Academy Marilag Class of 1995. He holds a master's degree in Maritime Affairs from the World Maritime University in Malmö, Sweden.

New Commandant: Vice Admiral Rommel Agsaullo Supangan Position in line: 31st Commandant Award conferred on the outgoing chief: Presidential Legion of Honor
Why it matters for exams: The Philippine Coast Guard is central to the country's maritime disputes, so its leadership change is a likely current-affairs question.
