WFP opens a free emergency cargo service for flood relief in Myanmar's Ayeyarwady Region
3 September 2026
The World Food Programme launched an emergency cargo transport service in Myanmar, free to use for humanitarian organisations moving relief into flood-hit areas. It began with the towns of Lemyethna, Yegyi and Ngathaingchaung in the Ayeyarwady Region and was set to run for an initial two weeks, with room to extend and widen. Eligible cargo covers food and nutrition assistance, water, sanitation and hygiene supplies, medicines and emergency shelter material. Michael Dunford, WFP Representative and Country Director in Myanmar, said that when floodwaters cut communities off, logistics decides whether an operation works. WFP also started an emergency food response in the Sagaing Region, which faces conflict and access limits. Across the Ayeyarwady and Sagaing regions the agency had reached 15,000 people with emergency rations.
