Why the capital of the islands is called Sri Vijaya Puram

Every current release about the islands now datelines Sri Vijaya Puram, so the reason for the name is worth setting down.
The Government decided to rename Port Blair, the capital of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands, as Sri Vijaya Puram.
The Union Home Minister said the earlier name carried a colonial legacy, while the new name honours the victory of the freedom struggle and the islands' role in it.
He noted that the islands once served as a naval base of the Chola Empire and are now placed to be a key base for strategic and development goals.
He said the islands were where Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose first unfurled the national flag.
The Cellular Jail in the city held Veer Savarkar and other freedom fighters.

Old name: Port Blair New name: Sri Vijaya Puram Empire whose naval base it was: Chola Empire
Why it matters for exams: Place-name changes, the Chola naval reach and the Cellular Jail are all standard exam facts.
