The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office said on 12 October that Iran's ambassador had been summoned, with Minister for the Middle East Stephen Doughty conducting the summons. Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband said: "Britain will not tolerate threats on our soil." The UK designated two Iranian nationals under the 2023 Iran Sanctions Regulations: Ruhollah Bazghandi, whom the Foreign Office describes as Head of Counterespionage Operations within the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), and Shahram Ali Reza Tamarzadeh Jakki, whom it describes as a facilitator of the Zindashti criminal network. Both face an asset freeze, a travel ban and director disqualification. The Foreign Office said more than 550 Iranian individuals and entities have been sanctioned. In a statement to the House of Commons the same day, the UK Prime Minister said the government's assessment is that the RAF Fairford incident is "highly likely to have been coordinated in Iran, almost certainly directed by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard". Iran's Foreign Ministry has called the UK's claims a "clumsy false flag operation", according to Al Jazeera.

US Central Command (CENTCOM) said that on Saturday 10 October a US military fighter jet struck the stern of the Panama-flagged cargo ship M/V Ocean Molica, also known as the Arika Sun, in the Gulf of Oman with a precision munition, "fully disabling the ship's propulsion without harming the crew". CENTCOM said the vessel had previously departed an Iranian port and that its crew "ignored repeated warnings and attempted to run the ongoing naval blockade against Iran". CENTCOM said it resumed the blockade of ships entering or departing Iranian ports on 14 July and that, over "three months of strict enforcement", it has disabled four commercial vessels and turned around 135 ships; it also said US forces destroyed 10 tankers linked to the IRGC's "multibillion-dollar shadow network". The UK Maritime Trade Operations agency said it had received a report of an incident involving a tanker and military forces in the Gulf of Oman and that authorities were investigating.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi telephoned Saudi Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan on Sunday 11 October. The Saudi Foreign Ministry said they discussed the recent escalation in the region and the efforts being made to address it. The Tribune (ANI), citing Al Jazeera, reported it as the first publicly reported contact between the two ministers since the Houthis intensified attacks on Saudi Arabia. According to a statement from Tehran, Araghchi said: "Insisting on a military approach and disregarding a political solution would only further complicate the situation", and offered Iran's help in starting dialogue between Saudi Arabia and the Houthis. On Monday Foreign Ministry spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said: "We do not want hostilities to continue between two Muslim countries".

Mohsen Rezaei, described by Al Jazeera as Iran's security chief, said on Sunday night (11 October) that a system in which smaller vessels move Gulf crude to larger tankers is now an explicit target for Tehran. Al Jazeera reported that he claimed the system is run by US Central Command with the help of the UAE military, and quoted him as saying: "You are smuggling, but the strait is under Iran's control, and we manage it." The Week reports that Tehran has said it will not step back until Washington meets seven conditions, including the lifting of the naval blockade. Al Jazeera reports that freight made up 25 to 30 per cent of the cost of Gulf crude, against 1 to 3 per cent before the war, according to the maritime intelligence firm Windward; that Gulf national oil companies have offered discounts of up to $35 a barrel below official selling prices; and that between 15 and 20 per cent of very large crude carriers (VLCCs) are tied up with a logistics system that relies on shuttle transfers. The Week gives the same freight and VLCC ranges. It also reports that the US naval blockade pushed Iran's own crude exports to zero in September.

Iran's Oil Minister Mohsen Paknejad, in the post since August 2024, resigned, citing "personal reasons". The president's office accepted the resignation on Sunday 4 October, and a statement carried by state broadcaster IRIB named Hamid Bovard, 62, chief executive of the National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC) since 2024, as acting oil minister while the government picks a permanent replacement. According to The National, the government said the price change addressed a daily petrol deficit of about 10 million litres. From 7 September, petrol above the 110-litre monthly subsidised quota costs 100,000 rials a litre; the first 60 litres cost 15,000 rials a litre and the next 50 litres 30,000 rials. Per the central bank chief, the US naval blockade has cut Iranian crude exports to zero.

Mohammad Eslami, head of the Atomic Energy Organization of Iran, said on Sunday 11 October that the achievements of Iran's indigenous nuclear industry "cannot be stopped", citing electricity generation as a main use, and criticised the IAEA for not condemning repeated US threats to bomb Iran's nuclear facilities again, according to Al Jazeera. Organization spokesman Behrouz Kamalvandi said Iran will pursue its interests through diplomacy if possible and "in the field of battle" if not. Al Jazeera adds that Iran says a deal could involve diluting its high-enriched uranium in later stages but that it will not abandon enrichment, while US Vice President JD Vance said last week that Iran must make a "meaningful" reduction in enrichment capacity. TASS reported on 8 October that Eslami told the portal Es-Siyasa that inspections of nuclear facilities that have been attacked or are under threat are impossible, and that cooperation with the IAEA is prohibited by law.

UN News reports that the United Nations Secretary-General appealed on 6 October 2026 for an end to the United States-Iran war as he began an official visit to Pakistan.
"From Islamabad, I want to send a loud and clear message to all parties," Antonio Guterres told journalists in the capital. "End the conflict. Return to diplomacy. Fully restore navigational rights and freedoms in accordance with international law."
The UN says the crisis began in late February 2026 following joint United States-Israeli strikes on Iran, after which Tehran launched counter attacks on targets in Gulf countries and Jordan and blocked transit through the Strait of Hormuz.
The UN describes the strait as critical for global trade in crude oil, fertilisers and liquefied natural gas, and says hundreds of ships and their crews have been stuck at sea for months.
Guterres said Pakistan's efforts "helped deliver the 17 June Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, the subsequent ceasefire, and the framework for further negotiations".

The International Monetary Fund published its twice-yearly World Economic Outlook on Tuesday in Bangkok, where the IMF and the World Bank are holding their annual meetings.
The Fund said global growth had withstood the Middle East conflict better than feared over the past six months, and that the rerouting of oil supplies away from the Strait of Hormuz and the release of strategic energy stocks had helped to contain the impact on oil prices from the United States-Iran war.
It warned that emergency stocks are now depleted, and that high debt levels and deficits in many countries could leave governments with little capacity to protect consumers from any future jump in prices.
"Without shoring up supply capacity and replenishing policy buffers, the global economy could soon test the limits of resilience," the report said.
The IMF revised its forecast for global growth this year up to 3.1 per cent, against 3 per cent in its July update, and left next year's forecast unchanged at 3.4 per cent.
Launching the report, the IMF's economic counsellor Silvana Tenreyro said "the global economy has been resilient, but that resilience is reaching its limits".
The IMF also said the economic fallout from the conflict remained "highly uncertain".

The World Bank's country page for the Islamic Republic of Iran says GDP is estimated to have contracted by 2.7 per cent in 2025/26, the Iranian year ending March 20, 2026.
The Bank attributes the contraction to military escalation in June 2025, widespread protests and strikes, a country-wide internet and telecommunications blackout, and trade disruptions in March 2026 amid growing tensions in the Strait of Hormuz.
It says oil sector performance is expected to be constrained by disruptions to shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, at least in the near term, while non-oil growth is projected to be limited by damaged infrastructure, persistent water and energy shortages, and weakened investment sentiment.
The Bank says high inflation and declining real incomes are projected to suppress domestic demand, and that poverty is expected to increase, driven by high food inflation and import shortages.
It adds that international trade is likely to remain constrained by financial sanctions and by challenges in securing international transport and insurance services.
The World Bank has produced the Iran Economic Monitor, its economic report on the country, since April 2016.

The UK Maritime Trade Operations said on Wednesday 7 October 2026 that a tanker sailing off the north coast of Qatar reported being struck "by multiple projectiles". The vessel was in the Gulf, about 500km (300 miles) west of the Strait of Hormuz.
The same day Tehran said transit routes in the strait that Iran deems illegal would soon be closed, in reference to a southern pathway hugging Oman's coast.
Mohammadreza Naqdi, an adviser to the Revolutionary Guards' Commander, said: "The strait of Hormuz is closed, and the armed forces of the Islamic Republic of Iran have full control over it."
The United States secretary of state, Marco Rubio, said the same day that Iran had "lost complete control" of the strait, adding: "There's almost as much oil flowing out now as there was before this conflict began."
In the week to 5 October 2026 there were at least 12 attacks on oil, liquefied natural gas and liquefied petroleum gas tankers around the strait, and the price of Brent crude topped $100 per barrel.
Iran's security chief Mohsen Rezaei said on the night of 11 October 2026 that a shuttle system moving oil out of the strait in smaller vessels was an explicit target, saying: "the strait is under Iran's control, and we manage it."

BBC Verify, using figures from the shipping data company Kpler, says global diesel exports fell from around 6.8 million barrels per day in 2025 to around 5.8 million barrels per day in September 2026.
Exports from the Gulf states - Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman - fell from around 1.4 million barrels per day in 2025 to around 670,000 barrels per day in September 2026.
BBC Verify says this decline has been driven by the impact of the United States-Iran war on flows of refined diesel from the Gulf states through the Strait of Hormuz, where traffic has been disrupted by Iranian strikes on tankers and the United States blockade of Iran's ports.
Average United States retail diesel prices were $6.20 per gallon on 5 October 2026, against a record $6.50 per gallon on 21 September and around $3.50 before the war, according to the US Energy Information Administration.
UK diesel cost 199p a litre on 5 October 2026, according to the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero.
Al Jazeera notes that before the war about 27 percent of global seaborne oil trade and almost 20 percent of liquefied natural gas trade transited through the Strait of Hormuz.

The United Kingdom's Prime Minister, Andy Burnham, told MPs on Monday that the incident at RAF Fairford in Gloucestershire was "almost certainly directed by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard" and "highly likely to have been coordinated in Iran".
Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband summoned Iran's ambassador to say that "Britain will not tolerate threats on our soil". The Foreign Office sanctioned two Iranians, including the head of Iran's counterespionage operations, with travel bans and asset freezes.
Iran's ambassador to the United Kingdom, Seyed Ali Mousavi, said Tehran was not involved and was willing to cooperate with British authorities.
In a statement late on Monday, Iran's Ministry of Foreign Affairs said the United Kingdom had failed to provide sufficient evidence and described the claim as a "clumsy false flag operation".
A police operation began after officers were alerted to three suspicious vehicles near the base in the early hours of 27 September 2026. Seven men, all in their 20s, were arrested and later bailed, and no one has been charged.
