The United Nations General Assembly approved three more years for Bangladesh before it leaves the least developed country (LDC) category. Bangladesh will now graduate on 24 November 2029 instead of 24 November 2026. Uruguay tabled the draft on behalf of the G-77 and no country opposed it. General Assembly President Khalilur Rahman chaired the plenary meeting. The Committee for Development Policy (CDP) had recommended the deferral and the Economic and Social Council referred the matter to the Assembly on 21 July. Bangladesh was placed on the LDC list in 1975. The Assembly asked Bangladesh to carry on with reforms and report progress to the CDP every year.

UN High Commissioner for Refugees Barham Salih said conditions for a voluntary, safe, dignified and sustainable return do not exist at the moment. Bangladesh's cabinet gave policy-level and final approval to the draft Special Solar Power Installation Ordinance 2026 at its 25th meeting, chaired by Prime Minister Tarique Rahman at the Secretariat. The government wants 3,000 to 4,000 megawatts of solar capacity in place before next summer. Panels may go on government and private buildings and on unused land. Two investment models are named: under OPEX some participants carry the operating costs, while under CAPEX investors put up the initial capital and run the projects for the long term. The Power Division has drawn up a National Renewable Energy Development Strategy 2026-2030 to steer the work. Its stated aims are to lean less on imported fossil fuels, trim electricity subsidies and firm up energy security. The ordinance takes effect once the Legislative and Parliamentary Affairs Division finishes its scrutiny.

This fills in the agreement the two leaders promised at today's Tokyo summit to bring into force quickly. The Economic Partnership Agreement (EPA) was signed in Tokyo on 6 February 2026 and is Bangladesh's first EPA with any country. Bangladesh's Commerce Adviser Sk. Bashir Uddin signed for Dhaka and State Minister for Foreign Affairs Horii Iwao signed for Japan. About 7,379 Bangladeshi products get full duty-free access to Japan, while 1,039 Japanese products get duty-free or preferential treatment in Bangladesh. Under the deal Bangladeshi exporters get duty-free access for 97 per cent of their export basket, including ready-made garments. Japanese automobiles were deliberately left out of duty-free entry to encourage vehicle manufacturing inside Bangladesh. Bangladesh's earlier trade pact, a preferential trade agreement with Bhutan, has been in force since December 2020.

Background
This sets out the measuring frame behind today's story on Bangladesh getting three more years in the least developed country category. The Committee for Development Policy (CDP) judges a country on three criteria and reviews the list every three years. For the 2027 review the graduation marks are a gross national income per head of $1,382 or above, a Human Assets Index of 66 or above, and an Economic Vulnerability Index of 32 or below. A country must reach any two of the three marks in two reviews one after the other. There is also an income-only route: from the 2024 review a country qualifies on income alone if its income per head is three times the threshold, which is $4,146 for the 2027 review. The CDP finds a country eligible, confirms it at the next review and then recommends graduation with a preparatory period of three years, or up to five. ECOSOC endorses that recommendation and the General Assembly fixes the exact graduation date.
