The Nobel Assembly at Karolinska Institutet has decided to award the 2026 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine jointly to Karl Deisseroth, Peter Hegemann and Georg Nagel.
The citation is "for their discoveries concerning light-gated ion channels and optogenetics".
Deisseroth works at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute and Stanford University, USA; Hegemann at Humboldt University of Berlin and Nagel at the University of Wurzburg, Germany.
Hegemann and Nagel discovered channelrhodopsin, a protein on the surface of the single-celled alga Chlamydomonas that opens an ion channel when lit by blue light.
Deisseroth introduced the channelrhodopsin gene into nerve cells from rats and triggered a nerve signal with blue light, publishing the breakthrough in 2005.
Per Svenningsson, Chair of the Nobel Committee for Physiology or Medicine, said optogenetics allows brain mapping in a way researchers could once only dream of.

Kenya's first Ebola death has triggered a race to trace everyone the victim came into contact with, the World Health Organization's Representative in Kenya, Dr Neema Rusibamayila Kimambo, told UN News in Nairobi.
The strain involved is Bundibugyo, which has now claimed its first life in Kenya.
The victim, a man who had lived in the Democratic Republic of the Congo for several years, fell ill there, flew to Nairobi via Kampala and Entebbe in Uganda on 3 October, went straight to hospital and died in the Kenyan capital.
Around 10 of the man's relatives have been placed under quarantine, and 21 health workers who served him in hospital have been contacted.
The Government is working with the airline to reach roughly 23 passengers and four crew members who were on the flight.
WHO is supporting Kenya, the DRC and Uganda in contact tracing, surveillance and screening; so far there have been no other infections.
In the DRC the outbreak declared on May 15, the country's 17th, has claimed more than 4,000 lives with confirmed cases reaching 8,300 across seven provinces.

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk told a high-level dialogue on reparatory justice in Geneva that the legacy of enslavement and colonialism continues to shape the lives of Africans and people of African descent.
Over 30 million people were violently uprooted from Africa and condemned to a life of slavery, he said, and no country involved in enslavement or colonialism has fully confronted that past.
He said the transatlantic trade was an organised system of domination that treated tens of millions of African men, women and children as commodities.
In some regions police are several times more likely to use force against people of African descent, and people of the diaspora are disproportionately represented in prisons.
Turk warned that artificial intelligence and other technologies are already reproducing human biases and could deepen systemic racism.
He said reparatory justice should not be understood as financial compensation alone, but should include truth-telling, formal apologies, memorials and restitution of cultural artefacts.
Many countries still lack anti-racism legislation and fewer than one in four have comprehensive anti-discrimination law.

Reem Alsalem, UN Special Rapporteur on the causes and consequences of violence against women and girls, presented a report to the General Assembly on violence against older women.
She said older women face violence, exploitation and neglect yet remain largely invisible in the laws, policies, data and services designed to protect women overall.
An estimated 664 million women were aged 60 or older in 2025, a number projected to reach 1.13 billion by 2050.
The report treats violence against older women as a distinct and intersectional issue rooted in discrimination, ageism and inequality.
It identifies physical, psychological, sexual and economic violence as well as coercive control, neglect, abandonment and technology-facilitated violence.
It also records exploitation of pensions and property, digital exclusion, denial of healthcare or assistive devices and barriers to reporting and justice.
Widows, migrant and stateless women, rural women, women with disabilities and women in institutional care are identified as particularly at risk.

The UN migration agency IOM has warned that Djibouti is facing overlapping emergencies as refugees fleeing the conflict in Yemen arrive on its shores while migrants continue to travel in the opposite direction.
More than 3,700 refugees have reached the Horn of Africa nation in the past three weeks after a dangerous crossing of the Red Sea, said Alexandre Coissac, head of IOM's mission in the country, briefing journalists in Geneva by video link.
IOM has recorded more than 20,000 journeys made from Ethiopia since 10 September by migrants heading for Yemen in the hope of finding work in the Gulf.
Another 539 Ethiopian migrants have arrived from Yemen on their way home.
Between 20 and 30 September, more than 3,000 stranded migrants were observed along migratory routes in Djibouti, facing dehydration, exhaustion and shortages of food and water.
Coissac said most migrants bound for Yemen were unaware of the grave situation there as fighting between Government and Houthi forces intensifies.
He called for more support for new arrivals, migrants in distress and host communities in Obock.

The UAE-built probe for the Emirates Mission to the Asteroid Belt has completed vibration testing and is undergoing thermal vacuum tests ahead of a launch in March 2028.
Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, viewed a flight-identical model of the probe, developed by Abu Dhabi's Technology Innovation Institute.
The mother spacecraft, MBR Explorer, is to launch in a three-week window in March 2028 on an eight-year journey of about five billion kilometres.
It will use gravity assists around Venus, Earth and Mars, conduct fly-bys of six asteroids and reach the asteroid 269 Justitia in 2036.
The deployable probe will descend on a ballistic trajectory with no propulsion to slow it, striking Justitia at between 15 and 27 metres per second and possibly excavating a crater.
About 40 people worked on the probe over 18 months, according to the Technology Innovation Institute.
Justitia is of scientific interest because its spectrum more closely resembles objects in the distant Kuiper Belt than its neighbours in the main belt.

UNFCCC Executive Secretary Simon Stiell said pregnancy and childbirth have become a new fault line in the global climate crisis as extreme heat worsens.
He was speaking in Fiji at an event organised by the charitable foundation Wellcome on the first day of the pre-COP ministerial meeting, ahead of the COP31 climate conference in Antalya.
Stiell said extreme heat during pregnancy is increasingly linked to premature birth, stillbirth, low birth weight and maternal complications.
He cited a Wellcome-commissioned survey of maternal health professionals in five countries across five continents.
Some 73 per cent of those surveyed reported that heat-linked cases or complications had increased over the past five years.
And 81 per cent were concerned or very concerned that extreme heat would increasingly put maternal, foetal and newborn health at risk without more action.
He called for maternal and newborn health to be built into countries' climate plans and for the tripling of adaptation finance agreed at COP30 to be delivered.

A new report by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime describes a booming illicit market in medicines in Central Africa.
From 2020 through 2025, authorities seized 251 tonnes of medical products in Cameroon, Republic of Congo, Gabon, Central African Republic and Chad.
Annual seizures rose from about five tonnes in 2020 to nearly 116 tonnes in 2024, before exceeding 97 tonnes in 2025.
Cameroon accounted for nearly all the seizures recorded in 2025, with 96 tonnes intercepted, compared with just 2.5 tonnes five years earlier.
The products ranged from antibiotics, antimalarial and anti-inflammatory drugs to painkillers and psychoactive substances such as tramadol and pregabalin.
Sylvie Bertrand, UNODC's regional representative for West and Central Africa, said the report outlines a multimodal trafficking system using maritime, riverine, air and road routes.
The report was produced with the World Health Organization and the Economic and Monetary Community of Central Africa.
The UN cautioned that larger seizures can reflect both greater trafficking and more aggressive enforcement.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres issued a message marking three years since the 7 October attacks on Israel by Hamas and other Palestinian armed groups.
He said more than 1,200 Israelis and foreign nationals were killed in the attack, and another 251 people were abducted and taken into Gaza as hostages.
He also recalled the suffering of Palestinians in Gaza from the hostilities that followed.
According to UN agencies, Israeli attacks have killed more than 70,000 people, including 20,000 children, and wounded more than 100,000.
Nearly all of Gaza's 2.1 million people have been displaced, and the territory now has the highest proportion of child amputees in the world.
Guterres said the October 2025 ceasefire has brought some relief but not yet security, adequate humanitarian aid or a credible path to recovery and peace.
He urged all parties to implement their commitments in full and move to the next phase of the ceasefire under Security Council resolution 2803.
