Public sector banks kept open on a Sunday ahead of a three-day bank strike

The Ministry of Finance directed that all Public Sector Banks and Regional Rural Banks, along with their branches, ATMs and currency chests, would function normally on Sunday, 27 September 2026. The step was taken because the United Forum of Bank Unions called a three-day nationwide strike from 28 to 30 September 2026, which would otherwise have combined with the weekend to shut banking services for an extended stretch. The Reserve Bank of India approved the special working day. The government said the priority was customer convenience and appealed to the unions to defer the strike.

Election Commission orders doorstep document collection for voters flagged under Special Intensive Revision

At a meeting on 26 September 2026, the Election Commission of India decided that Booth Level Officers will visit the homes of electors marked as 'unmapped' or flagged for discrepancies during the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, collect their documents, and upload them on ECINET for the Electoral Registration Officer to decide, instead of requiring mandatory in-person hearings. Hearings will now be held only in exceptional circumstances, preferably online. A committee led by a Senior Deputy Election Commissioner, including an independent IIT/IIIT expert, will review ECINET's compliance with the Registration of Electors Rules, 1960. The Commission also extended the claims/objections filing deadline in Delhi to 30 October and its disposal to 30 November 2026, and in Maharashtra to 12 October and 10 November 2026 respectively. District Election Officers were directed to set up help desks for vulnerable groups such as the homeless and daily-wage labourers. SIR has been completed in 20 States/Union Territories so far, including Bihar and West Bengal.

Ministry of Corporate Affairs cautions public against non-compliant Nidhi Companies

The Ministry of Corporate Affairs issued an advisory cautioning the public against Nidhi Companies that promise unusually high returns without regulatory compliance. Nidhi Companies function under the Companies Act, 2013 and the Nidhi Rules, 2014, and must file Form NDH-4 to be declared as Nidhis by the Central Government; so far only 395 companies have received such declaration. The advisory noted that deposits in Nidhi Companies are not insured by the Deposit Insurance and Credit Guarantee Corporation (DICGC), so recovery can be difficult if a company fails or defrauds depositors. The public was asked to verify a company's status on the MCA website before investing and to avoid relying solely on promises of high returns.

Why it matters for exams: Tests awareness of financial-sector consumer protection regulations and the regulatory framework governing Nidhi Companies, relevant to economy and governance sections.

Technology Development Board backs Agnikul Cosmos to develop reusable Agnibaan launch vehicle

The Technology Development Board (TDB), under the Department of Science and Technology, signed an agreement with Agnikul Cosmos Private Limited, Chennai, to support development of the reusable Agnibaan launch vehicle. The support amounts to ₹200 crore, extended through Optionally Convertible Debentures under TDB's Research, Development and Innovation (RDI) Fund. The funding will help Agnikul progress the vehicle from Technology Readiness Level (TRL)-4 and above to TRL-8, targeting full-system reusability rather than conventional single-stage recovery. Key technical areas include a lightweight upper stage, a semi-cryogenic liquid propulsion system with deep throttling and restart capability, and a descent propulsion system for controlled recovery. Agnikul had earlier developed the Agnibaan orbital-class launch vehicle and the Agnilet engine, a single-piece 3D-printed rocket engine. TDB Secretary Rajesh Kumar Pathak said the initiative supports indigenous technologies that require sustained investment to advance India's space capabilities.
