Aditya-L1 and Proba-3 coronagraphs jointly decode solar eruptions near their birthplace

For the first time, the same solar eruptions have been studied jointly by India's Aditya-L1 and Europe's Proba-3.
The instruments used were the Visible Emission Line Coronagraph on Aditya-L1 and the ASPIICS coronagraph on Proba-3.
The study was led by the Indian Institute of Astrophysics, Bengaluru, with European and American solar physicists, and was published in the journal Astronomy and Astrophysics.
Only two coronal mass ejections were recorded simultaneously by both instruments, on 14 and 16 September 2025.
The faster eruption moved at about 645 km per second and the slower one at 145 km per second, and mass and thermal energy estimates from the two instruments agreed well.
Aditya-L1 was launched on 2 September 2023 by PSLV-C57 and reached its halo orbit at the Sun-Earth L1 point on 6 January 2024.
