Nagaland observes its Statehood Day on 1 December, the day the ten-day Hornbill Festival opens at the Naga Heritage Village in Kisama near Kohima.
The State government portal says Nagaland was born as the 16th State of India on 1 December 1963.
Article 371A, the special provision with respect to the State of Nagaland, was added by the Constitution (Thirteenth Amendment) Act, 1962 and took effect on 01.12.1963.
The Constitution e-book carried by the Press Information Bureau says the Article rests on a political agreement reached between the Government of India and the Naga Peoples Convention.
Under its first clause, no Act of Parliament applies to Nagaland on the religious or social practices of the Nagas, Naga customary law and procedure, the administration of civil and criminal justice involving decisions according to Naga customary law, and the ownership and transfer of land and its resources.
Such an Act can extend to the State only if the Nagaland Legislative Assembly so decides by a resolution.
The Article opens with the words 'Notwithstanding anything contained in this Constitution'.
The 16-Point Agreement that led to statehood was reached in July 1960, after a Naga Peoples Convention delegation met Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru.

Villagers at Pangti in Wokha district have sighted this season's first Amur falcons, ahead of the weeks of roosting on the Doyang reservoir bank.
The Raptors MoU of the UN Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals says the Amur falcon, Falco amurensis, congregates in Nagaland from mid-October to mid-November on its migration.
Pangti is the village closest to the largest roost sites at the Doyang reservoir, which was formed by a hydro-electric dam.
In November 2013 more than one million falcons were present at the two main roost sites, described as the largest single congregation of any bird of prey ever recorded.
The birds roost 10 to 15 m up in the tree canopy, and the page calls Nagaland the falcon capital of the world for four to six weeks each year.
A Memorandum of Understanding was signed between the villages of Pangti, Asha and Sungro and the Nagaland Forest Department after a large harvest of the birds was documented in the Wokha region.
Three falcons were fitted with 5 g solar-powered satellite tags and named Naga, Wokha and Pangti.
