A seismically sensitive, cyclone-prone island: the risk plan written into the Great Nicobar project

As the Great Nicobar project moves towards a final decision, the hazard profile of the island it will sit on is part of the record.
The island is seismically sensitive and cyclone-prone.
A risk assessment and a disaster management plan have been prepared for the project.
The hybrid gas and solar power plant proposed for the project is intended to add resilience, since a single fuel source would be a single point of failure.
Environmental clearance was granted under the EIA Notification, 2006 and the ICRZ Notification, 2019, with 42 compliance conditions attached.
The clearance conditions sit alongside the commitment that 65.99 sq km of the project area is to be kept as green zones with no tree felling.

Compliance conditions: 42 Notifications under which clearance was given: EIA Notification, 2006 and ICRZ Notification, 2019 Green zones: 65.99 sq km
Why it matters for exams: Island seismicity, the EIA and ICRZ notifications and hybrid power for resilience tie geography to environmental law.
