Abbas decree sets Palestinian presidential and legislative elections for 11 September 2027

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has postponed legislative elections until September 2027, as reported by the Palestinian Wafa news agency on 10 October 2026. Abbas issued a decree setting presidential and legislative elections for 11 September 2027. The legislative elections had been scheduled for 28 November 2026. The presidency cited security, logistical and on-the-ground obstacles to creating the conditions needed for elections. Wafa later reported that the Executive Committee of the Palestine Liberation Organisation approved the postponement, saying conditions had changed fundamentally since the elections were announced. European Union foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas had said the elections would offer a long-overdue opportunity to renew the legitimacy of Palestinian institutions. The last Palestinian legislative elections were held in 2006, when Hamas defeated Fatah.

New date for both elections: 11 September 2027 Legislative elections were due: 28 November 2026 Last legislative elections: 2006 Reported by: Wafa news agency
Why it matters for exams: An election postponement with an exact decree date, an old date and a twenty-year gap since the last vote is a precise current affairs fact.
