ASEAN meteorological agencies open an El Nino preparedness conference at Da Nang as WMO expects a December peak
23 October 2026
A conference on Strengthening Regional Preparedness and Response to El Nino Impacts in ASEAN 2026-2027 has opened at Da Nang in Viet Nam. It was organised by the Viet Nam Meteorological and Hydrological Administration, which comes under the Ministry of Agriculture and Environment. The conference was held during the 47th Annual Meeting of the ASEAN Sub-Committee on Meteorology and Geophysics, and brought together representatives of the World Meteorological Organization, partner organisations and national meteorological services across Southeast Asia. Ben Churchill, Director of the WMO Regional Office for Asia and the Pacific, said El Nino will keep intensifying with a peak around December 2026 and that demand for information on localised impacts will grow. He said intensity is not the only factor that determines local outcomes, that impacts may appear with a delay, and that they can last after the event passes its peak.
