White House says a local ceasefire will begin in Russian-occupied Oleshky on 29 October
23 October 2026
The White House said on 23 October 2026 that US First Lady Melania Trump had secured a localised ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine in the city of Oleshky.
The statement said the truce would begin on 29 October to allow humanitarian aid and the evacuation of civilians.
Oleshky lies in Ukraine's Kherson region and was seized by Russian forces in the first days of the full-scale invasion in February 2022.
The city had a population of about 24,000 before the war; its remaining residents are mostly elderly.
Civilian, non-military leaders from both countries are to visit residents and assess the help they need.
Russia and Ukraine had not formally commented when the statement was issued.
