Egypt calls Nile water security existential; Kazakhstan proposes a UN water organization
25 September 2026
Water security was a major theme on Friday, 25 September 2026, the fourth day of the UN General Assembly's high-level general debate.
Egypt's Prime Minister Moustafa Kamal Madbouly described the Nile as his country's lifeline.
He said water security was "an existential issue that is not open to compromise".
He said shared water resources should promote cooperation rather than conflict, and rejected unilateral action and "fait accompli policies".
Kazakhstan proposed creating an international water organization under UN auspices.
It also called for a Member State-led process to strengthen global water governance.
