Hyderabad Central Prison sets up a Gender-Neutral Cell after NHRC intervention
5 November 2026
The Central Prison at Hyderabad has set up a separate Gender-Neutral Cell for persons with diverse gender identities and expressions.
The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), India, was told of the step in a compliance report from the prison Superintendent.
It followed a visit on 8 October 2026 by the NHRC's Special Monitor for transgender persons and LGBTQ+ rights.
The Monitor had stressed the advisories of the NHRC and the Union Home Ministry on the welfare of transgender persons in prisons.
Inmates in the cell are also allowed affirmative clothing that matches their gender identity.
The NHRC said the step protects the dignity of people with diverse gender identities in correctional institutions.
