Kerala High Court presses for an Integrated Road Safety Monitoring Platform as the State proposes a Driver Profile Mechanism
3 November 2026
Hearing a suo motu case on road safety on Tuesday, the Kerala High Court said children and women could not be left to die under bus wheels and asked the State to act. The court wants a state-wide Integrated Road Safety Monitoring Platform that uses GIS to map accident black spots and hazards and follow up on corrective action. The Motor Vehicles Department proposed a Driver Profile Mechanism that would join up records held on the e-Challan, iRAD, VAHAN and SARATHI portals to flag habitual offenders. The Transport Commissioner told the court the Safe Keralam Project runs 726 cameras, including 675 AI cameras, but only four speed violation detection systems. The court directed more speed detection systems at accident-prone stretches. The DGP was asked to name a road safety officer to the platform's steering committee, and the advocate general to see the court's suggestions taken up. Of 28 planned Automated Testing Stations for vehicle fitness, only three have started work.
