Kerala opens the first sub-centre of the Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Scientific Temper, with 300 planned

The Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Scientific Temper is opening its first sub-centre in Thiruvananthapuram, at Women's College, Vazhuthacaud. Chief Minister V.D. Satheesan is to inaugurate it on November 4, with Higher Education Minister Roji M. John presiding. The State says this is the first step towards 300 such sub-centres, meant to spread scientific temper and a habit of rational enquiry. Three student initiatives of the Higher Education Council go out the same day. One of them is the Siddharth Student Welfare mobile app, built to curb ragging and make campuses safer. It carries the name of J.S. Siddharth, a student who died after being ragged at Pookode Veterinary College. A Student Aspiration Survey and an online course on scientific temper, prepared with C-DIT, are also being released.

Sub-centres planned: 300 First sub-centre venue: Women's College, Vazhuthacaud, Thiruvananthapuram
Why it matters for exams: The Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Scientific Temper and its 300-sub-centre plan is a new Kerala institution, and C-DIT's full form is a standing Kerala PSC question.
