KSEB's first battery storage plant, 15 MW at Mulleria in Kasaragod, discharges 60 MWh in trial runs

Kerala State Electricity Board's first Battery Energy Storage System is ready at Mulleria in Kasaragod district.
The plant is rated at 15 MW and is designed to deliver 15 MW continuously for four hours, about 60 MWh of storage.
In trial runs over two days it discharged 60 MWh into the grid during peak night hours.
It stands on one acre of KSEB land next to the Mulleria substation and has 14 containerised battery units, 7 power converter systems and 2 transformers.
It stores low-cost daytime power from the central grid and surplus solar from the Ambalathara and Paivalike solar parks.
KSEB will pay Rs 4.38 per unit for energy drawn at night, and reports zero capital expenditure apart from giving land free of cost.
Gujarat-based Opera Green Yana Private Limited executed the project, developed under NHPC.
Final operational clearance is awaited from the State Load Despatch Centre at Kalamassery.
