Lok Sabha Speaker accepts resignation of Srinagar MP Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi

The resignation of Aga Syed Ruhullah Mehdi, MP from Srinagar, has been accepted by Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla. Mehdi gave up his seat and also left the National Conference, on whose ticket he was elected to the Lok Sabha in 2024. A letter from the Lok Sabha Secretariat said the resignation took effect from November 3. A Gazette notification of the Secretariat dated November 5 confirmed the vacancy in the Srinagar Parliamentary Constituency. Mehdi is a three-time MLA. With his exit, Jammu and Kashmir now has one Lok Sabha seat without a member until a by-election is held.

Constituency: Srinagar Parliamentary Constituency Resignation effective from: November 3
Why it matters for exams: A Lok Sabha member resigns by writing to the Speaker, and the vacancy is filled by a by-election; both are standard polity questions.
