Philippine welfare department holds more than 4.57 million family food packs as Champi approaches

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) said relief goods are already prepositioned in geographically isolated and disadvantaged areas ahead of super typhoon Champi. Assistant Secretary Irene Dumlao of the DSWD's Disaster Response Management Group said goods had been prepositioned in Batanes province. Close to 200,000 family food packs are stored in local warehouses in Region 2, Cagayan Valley, which is expected to feel the effects of the approaching typhoon. As of Monday the department maintained more than 4.57 million family food packs, 345,426 non-food items and 204,695 ready-to-eat-food boxes, along with standby funds for local government units. The prepositioning framework is part of the DSWD's Buong Bansa Handa initiative, which set up two parallel supply chains for severe disasters.
