Super Typhoon Champi set to enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility and take the local name Rosal

The Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA) said on Tuesday, 20 October 2026 that Super Typhoon Champi was forecast to enter the Philippine Area of Responsibility (PAR) that same day. Weather specialist Veronica Torres said the cyclone would be given the local name Rosal once it entered the PAR. As of 3 a.m. that day it was 1,605 kilometers east of Central Luzon and still outside the PAR. PAGASA said Champi's trough would bring scattered rains and thunderstorms over Catanduanes, Northern Samar and Eastern Samar, while Palawan would see the same conditions because of the Intertropical Convergence Zone, and warned that moderate to heavy rains in those areas could result in flash floods or landslides.

Local name on entering PAR: Rosal Distance east of Central Luzon: 1,605 kilometers
Why it matters for exams: PAGASA's practice of giving entering cyclones a Philippine local name is a standard question on tropical cyclone naming systems.
