Riksdag clears Swedish state commitments of up to EUR 50 million for supercomputing contracts

The Riksdag approved an amendment to Sweden's central government budget for 2026 on computing capacity. Under the decision the Government, or a public agency designated by the Government, may enter into financial commitments on behalf of the state in supercomputing contracts for management and calculation of large data volumes. Sweden would commit up to EUR 50 million over a five-year period, with the possibility of further voluntary commitments. The commitment is tied to the European High Performance Computing Joint Undertaking, which is procuring AI gigafactories; member states finance the procurements in exchange for access to future computing resources. The aim is to let Sweden join the European action plan for advanced AI infrastructure promptly and secure computing capacity for research, innovation, business and the public sector. The proposal came as a committee initiative from the Committee on Finance and is reported as FiU12.

Why it matters for exams: Links a national budget decision to EU-level AI infrastructure, a pairing that economy and science-technology papers increasingly use.
