The Pantanal wetland and the Central Amazon in Brazil
Background
The Pantanal Conservation Area lies in western central Brazil, at the south-west corner of the State of Mato Grosso, within one of the world's largest freshwater wetland ecosystems. The headwaters of the Cuiabá and Paraguay rivers are located there. It was inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000. The Central Amazon Conservation Complex, at the confluence of the Negro and Solimões Rivers, covers more than 6 million hectares and contains the majority of the ecosystems recorded in the Amazon.
