Brasília, not Rio or São Paulo, is Brazil's capital

Brasília was created as the Brazilian capital in the central western part of the country from 1956 to 1960. UNESCO describes it as a definitive example of 20th century modernist urbanism. Its urban design is by Lucio Costa and its architectural creations are by Oscar Niemeyer. It was inscribed as a World Heritage Site in 1987. Exam trap: the capital is Brasília, not Rio de Janeiro or São Paulo.

Why it matters for exams: Capital-city traps (Brasília vs Rio de Janeiro vs São Paulo) are a perennial favourite in PSC and UPSC papers.
