Security Council unanimously renews Sudan sanctions regime for two months

The UN Security Council on 8 October 2026 unanimously renewed its Sudan sanctions regime for two months, until 11 December.
The regime comprises targeted sanctions and an arms embargo. The mandate of the panel of experts that monitors them now runs to 11 January 2027.
The text, drafted by the United States, is a "technical rollover" that leaves the mandate unchanged. It follows a one-month rollover adopted on 11 September.
The regime is rooted in the Darfur conflict of 2004, when the council moved to stem the flow of weapons into the region.
Separately, WHO says more than 700,000 displaced people in Tawila, Darfur face severe shortages; only 23 per cent of its $97.7 million humanitarian appeal for 2026 is funded.

Renewal period: Two months, until 11 December Panel of experts mandate: Until 11 January 2027 Vote: Unanimous WHO Sudan appeal funded: 23 per cent of $97.7 million
Why it matters for exams: Security Council voting, sanctions regimes and panels of experts are staple UPSC and PSC international organisation topics.

ECB account shows Governing Council backed a 25 basis point rate rise

The European Central Bank published on 8 October 2026 the account of its Governing Council meeting of 9-10 September 2026.
Mr Lane proposed raising all three key ECB interest rates by 25 basis points, including the deposit facility rate from 2.25% to 2.50%. The account records that all members supported the proposal and the Council took the monetary policy decisions. Markets had fully priced in a hike.
Headline HICP inflation rose to 3.3% in August from 2.9% in July; energy inflation rose to 14.3%.
September baseline projections: headline inflation of 3.0% (2026), 2.5% (2027) and 2.1% (2028); GDP growth of 0.9% (2026), 1.4% (2027) and 1.5% (2028).
Members assessed the risks to inflation to be to the upside and the risks to growth to the downside. The Council should keep a data-dependent, meeting-by-meeting approach with no pre-committed rate path.

Deposit facility rate backed by the Council: From 2.25% to 2.50% Headline HICP inflation, August: 3.3% Inflation projection 2026: 3.0% GDP growth projection 2026: 0.9%

Nature: laser locked to thorium-229 nuclear transition makes a stand-alone nuclear clock

A paper published online in Nature on 7 October 2026 reports a nuclear clock operating as a stand-alone device.
A continuous-wave laser is stabilised to the 148-nm nuclear transition of thorium-229, with the nuclei held in a millimetre-sized calcium fluoride crystal at room temperature.
Compared with a Yb+ single-ion atomic clock, its fractional frequency instability is about 3x10^-12 per square-root of averaging time, reaching roughly 10^-15 over one day.
The corresponding authors are E. Peik (Physikalisch-Technische Bundesanstalt, Braunschweig) and T. Schumm (TU Wien, Vienna).
The team searched for ultralight dark matter; no signal exceeded the detection threshold, so they set upper limits competitive with the best atomic clocks.

Nature: single-atom chemistry finds relativistic bond weakening in seaborgium hexacarbonyl

A Nature paper published online on 7 October 2026 reports gas chromatography of seaborgium (Sg, Z = 106) hexacarbonyl, Sg(CO)6, one atom at a time.
The first bond dissociation energy of Sg(CO)6 is 188(9) kJ/mol, about 4(2) kJ/mol lower than for W(CO)6, its lighter group 6 homologue.
This reverses the trend of increasing energy across group 6 hexacarbonyls from W to Sg.
The result agrees with relativistic theory, which attributes the weakening to relativistic destabilisation of the 6d atomic orbitals in Sg.
The corresponding author, Alexander Yakushev, is at GSI Helmholtzzentrum, Darmstadt; only three of 75 registered Sg decay chains were assigned to Sg(CO)6.

Nature: Australia's wildfire crisis linked to colonial land-use change, 1,000-year sediment record shows

A Nature paper published on 7 October 2026 links Australia's current wildfire crisis to colonial land-use change.
A team with corresponding author Michael-Shawn Fletcher of the University of Melbourne reconstructed 1,000 years of vegetation and fire history from a lake-sediment record in a temperate eucalypt forest in southeastern Australia.
Before British colonisation in 1788, the Gunaikurnai people's frequent, low-temperature cultural burning kept woodlands open and stable.
After colonial disruption, fire temperatures rose and eucalypt cover roughly quadrupled.
The authors describe a "catastrophic wildfire loop" and say integrating Indigenous knowledge into fire management is essential.
