Federal Reserve's 2025 Survey of Consumer Finances puts median US family net worth at $215,900

The Federal Reserve Board released the results of the 2025 Survey of Consumer Finances on 9 October 2026. The survey provides the public and policymakers with detailed insights into the economic condition of American families. Measured from 2022 to 2025 and adjusted for inflation, median family income rose 7 per cent to $82,200 while mean family income fell 6 per cent to $145,200. Median net worth rose 2 per cent to $215,900 and mean net worth rose 7 per cent to $1.24 million. The gap between the median and the mean, and the fact that the two income measures moved in opposite directions, point to gains concentrated at the upper end of the distribution.

Median family income: Up 7% to $82,200 Mean family income: Down 6% to $145,200 Median net worth: Up 2% to $215,900 Mean net worth: Up 7% to $1.24 million

Guterres proposes a $3.3 billion UN programme budget for 2027, 1.2 per cent below 2026

UN Secretary-General António Guterres presented a $3.3 billion programme budget proposal for 2027 on Tuesday.
The proposal is a cut of $40.8 million and is 1.2 per cent below the 2026 approved level.
He presented it to the General Assembly's Fifth Committee, made up of all 193 Member States, which handles administrative and budgetary matters.
Under the UN80 Initiative he proposed post relocations across 12 entities, the largest to Nairobi, and the downgrading of 14 senior positions.
For the first time the budget includes standard-cost adjustments from the outset, so there will be no separate recosting later.
He said efficiency alone cannot fix the liquidity crisis and that Member States must pay their dues in full and on time.

Disasters cost $228 billion a year in housing losses, UN says on the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction

Marking the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction, the UN said communities face $228 billion every year to rebuild housing after disasters.
The UN Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) said damage to housing accounts for 43 per cent of the direct cost of cyclones, floods, tsunamis and earthquakes.
Citing the Lloyd's Register Foundation World Risk Poll 2026, UNDRR said only 27 per cent of warned people with no household plan or confidence could act on a warning, against 83 per cent of those with both.
Secretary-General António Guterres called safer dwellings the shared responsibility of governments, developers, engineers and communities.
The International Organization for Migration (IOM) said it helped 1.4 million people in 2025 across 39 countries with disaster risk reduction programmes.

UNDP warns 800 million young people in developing economies may find no jobs and launches two initiatives

UNDP Administrator Alexander De Croo said about 800 million young people entering the labour market in developing economies will not find jobs unless countries act.
Over the next 15 years, 1.2 billion young people will leave school for the labour market, and jobs are projected for only 400 million of them.
He spoke from Bangkok, where he was attending the World Bank Group-IMF Annual Meetings.
UNDP launched an Investment Accelerator to improve investment policies and build pipelines of investment-ready projects.
It also launched a Jobs for Prosperity Facility to identify job-rich sectors and align skills with employers' needs.
Both are backed by partnerships with the World Bank Group, the European Investment Bank and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development.

Argentina asks the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea to halt the UK's Sea Lion oil project near the Falklands

Argentina has asked the International Tribunal for the Law of the Sea (ITLOS) to order the United Kingdom to halt an offshore oil project near the Falkland Islands (Malvinas).
The Hamburg-based tribunal announced the request on Tuesday.
Argentina wants the Sea Lion development in the North Malvinas Basin stopped while an arbitration case it launched on 28 September is under way.
The UN lists the Falkland Islands (Malvinas) as a non-self-governing territory.
Britain has administered the islands since 1833; Argentina claims sovereignty, and the two countries fought a war over them in 1982.
President Javier Milei had given London a two-week ultimatum over the project.

WHO says DR Congo has recorded over 51,000 suspected cholera cases this year as it also fights Ebola

The World Health Organization said more than 125,000 suspected cholera cases and 3,644 suspected deaths were recorded in the Democratic Republic of the Congo between January 2025 and the end of September 2026.
Since the start of 2026, more than 51,412 suspected cases, including 1,487 deaths, have been reported in 21 provinces.
South Kivu, North Kivu and Haut-Katanga account for nearly 60 per cent of suspected cases.
The country is also fighting an Ebola outbreak caused by the Bundibugyo strain: 9,066 cases and 4,381 deaths, a case fatality rate of 48.3 per cent.
The DRC and the Republic of Congo are preparing a joint cross-border cholera vaccination plan.

Monetary Authority of Singapore keeps the rate of appreciation of its S$NEER policy band unchanged

The Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) said on 14 October 2026 it will maintain the rate of appreciation of the S$NEER policy band.
There is no change to the width of the band or the level at which it is centred.
MAS manages monetary policy through the Singapore dollar nominal effective exchange rate (S$NEER), not an interest rate; in July 2026 it had raised the rate of appreciation very slightly.
MAS Core Inflation rose to 2.1 per cent year-on-year in July-August, from 1.5 per cent in the second quarter.
For 2026, MAS forecasts core inflation at 1.5-2.0 per cent and CPI-All Items inflation around 2.0 per cent; both are projected at 1.5-2.5 per cent in 2027.
MAS said the appreciating band will lean against an expected near-term rise in imported inflation.

Policy decision: Rate of appreciation of S$NEER band maintained MAS Core Inflation (Jul-Aug 2026): 2.1 per cent 2026 core inflation forecast: 1.5-2.0 per cent 2027 inflation forecast: 1.5-2.5 per cent

Nature study estimates conservation areas already cover 26.81 per cent of the world's land, near the 30 by 2030 target

A study published in Nature on 14 October 2026 estimates that conservation areas likely already cover 26.81 per cent of the terrestrial realm.
Official global figures report coverage of 18.5 per cent.
The authors, led by Helen M. K. O'Neill, sampled 25 countries and territories using national datasets and extrapolated the result.
Under Target 3 of the Global Biodiversity Framework, governments committed to raise coverage to at least 30 per cent by 2030.
The count includes protected areas and other effective area-based conservation measures (OECMs).
The study warns the extra land does not substantially fill gaps in ecological representativeness, so meeting the area figure alone will do little to stop biodiversity loss.
