The European Space Agency and the company Vast signed a Memorandum of Understanding during the 77th International Astronautical Congress, in an announcement dated 5 October 2026. The memorandum replaces an earlier ESA-Vast memorandum signed at ILA Berlin in June 2024 and runs for an initial three years, beginning with a joint feasibility study that will produce a roadmap and an indicative schedule for any binding agreements. It forms part of ESA's preparatory work for the end of service and de-orbiting of the International Space Station. The cooperation covers potential future astronaut missions aboard Vast's Haven station, which is under development, possible ESA hardware or infrastructure contributions, and ESA use of Haven including jointly defined research campaigns, science accommodations, up-mass and down-mass capacity and crew time to maintain continuity between ESA missions. The two sides will also exchange information on possible future European cargo and crew vehicles that could service Haven. Four crewed missions to the ISS and to Haven-1 are planned for 2027, including the first crewed mission to Haven-1. ESA Director General Josef Aschbacher, Vast chief executive Max Haot and ESA Director of Human and Robotic Exploration Daniel Neuenschwander were quoted in the announcement.

NASA announced on October 13, 2026 that astronaut and engineer Christina Koch will serve as acting deputy chief engineer, taking the role on Sunday, November 1. She succeeds Katherine Van Hooser, who retires on Wednesday, October 21, after more than 35 years at NASA. Koch will help lead NASA's engineering community, with responsibility for technical oversight, mission readiness and engineering excellence across the agency's programs and projects; she moves to management astronaut status and can no longer be assigned to future spaceflights. Koch most recently flew as a mission specialist on Artemis II in April 2026, the first crewed flight around the Moon in over 50 years. She spent 328 consecutive days on the International Space Station, a record for the longest single spaceflight by a woman, and took part in the first all-female spacewalks. She joined NASA at the Goddard Space Flight Center as an electrical engineer developing scientific instruments and was selected as an astronaut in 2013. NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman said Christina has seen NASA engineering from both sides of the equation. Van Hooser joined NASA in 1991 at Marshall Space Flight Center, was chief engineer for the Space Shuttle Main Engine during the final 21 shuttle flights, and became NASA's deputy chief engineer in 2023.

NASA released a final Request for Proposals on Friday, October 9, 2026, inviting industry to propose plans for the next generation of commercial space stations in low Earth orbit. The release is numbered RELEASE 26-086 and the solicitation is posted on SAM.gov. Companies would design, build, test, certify and operate commercial low Earth orbit destinations providing end-to-end destination and transportation services for human spaceflight. NASA will use firm-fixed-price, multi-award, indefinite-delivery and indefinite-quantity contracts. It plans to select two or more contractors for early development and then issue a competitive task order for final design, test and evaluation, plus certification and services, from one or more contractors. Proposals are due on Tuesday, December 8, and contract awards are expected in spring 2027. The release records that NASA issued two Requests for Information in March 2026 on low Earth orbit destinations and transportation, and a draft Request for Proposals in July 2026, followed by an industry day and one-on-one meetings. NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman said the agency will never give up its presence in low Earth orbit.
