Authorities in Europe, Asia and other continents temporarily took some government websites offline on October 21 and 22, 2026 to protect against newly discovered security vulnerabilities in the PHP programming language, which is used by more than 70 per cent of websites. The United States National Security Agency issued a rare public warning saying that all organizations using PHP for their systems should be prepared for an update addressing two critical vulnerabilities, and advised taking websites offline if they could not be updated immediately. In Germany the Federal Ministry for Digital Transformation and Government Modernisation took some websites offline as a preventive measure, and France's Ministry of the Interior deactivated the official websites of local administrative offices. Authorities in Belgium, the Netherlands, Finland and the Czech Republic also shut down websites to apply a security patch. The pair of vulnerabilities, named PHP2Shell, were pinpointed with the help of artificial intelligence.
Share of websites using PHP:
more than 70 percent of websites
Name of the vulnerabilities:
PHP2Shell
Agency that warned:
United States National Security Agency (NSA)
Why it matters for exams: It is a rare case of a software vulnerability drawing a public warning from a national signals intelligence agency, and the name PHP2Shell is examinable.

One person was killed and eight injured in an attack on Saudi Arabia's King Fahd International Airport in the eastern city of Dammam, the General Authority of Civil Aviation said in a statement on October 21, 2026. All the wounded, with injuries ranging from minor to critical, were taken to hospitals. Earlier the same day two people were killed after Saudi air defences intercepted a drone that was attempting to hit a facility at Saudi Aramco's Shaybah oilfield, the Ministry of Energy said. The attack was the latest in a series on Saudi airports as the conflict between Houthi forces and the Saudi-backed internationally recognised Yemeni government intensifies: a projectile strike on Riyadh's King Khalid International Airport on October 11 killed one person and injured 11, and an attack on the same airport on October 10 claimed 12 lives and injured more than 300.
Casualties at Dammam:
One killed, eight injured
Oilfield targeted by a drone:
Saudi Aramco's Shaybah oilfield
October 10 attack toll at Riyadh:
12 killed and more than 300 injured

The United States Department of State ordered the departure of non-emergency government employees and their family members from its mission in Saudi Arabia on October 21, 2026, as attacks by the Houthi movement on the kingdom increased. State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott said the Houthis had increasingly engaged in hostilities against Saudi Arabia, including attacks on civilian airports and other critical infrastructure that caused civilian casualties and severe travel disruptions. He said the safety and security of department personnel and their families remained the highest priority. Pigott said an earlier media report that the United States planned departures from embassies across the Gulf was inaccurate. The United States had previously ordered non-essential staff to leave the Gulf before the start of its war against Iran in late February.

North Korea has said it plans to resume broadcasting anti-South Korea propaganda along the armed border between the two countries, while Seoul urged Pyongyang to discuss easing tensions. Kim Yo Jong, a senior North Korean official and the sister of leader Kim Jong Un, said on October 21, 2026 that North Korea will place loudspeakers along the entire border, after visiting fortifications along the frontier with Pak Jong-chon. She said in a follow-up statement on October 22 that the loudspeakers would be on standby within days and that new counter means would be placed on alert. Tensions rose after a landmine blast last month wounded three South Korean soldiers in the Demilitarized Zone; Seoul and the United Nations Command, which oversees the 1953 armistice, concluded it was a North Korean anti-personnel mine and an armistice violation, which Pyongyang denied. North Korea has laid mines, strung barbed wire and erected anti-tank barriers along the 250 km military demarcation line.

Kim Yo Jong
Length of the military demarcation line:

Nigerian health officials said on October 21, 2026 that test results had confirmed the country's first case of Ebola, and that the virus matches the Bundibugyo strain circulating in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The Bundibugyo strain has now affected four African nations and has become the deadliest Ebola outbreak in the DR Congo's recorded history. The confirmation was announced by the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention, whose headquarters is in Abuja. The World Health Organization also confirmed the strain, for which there is neither a vaccine nor a specific treatment.

Witkoff described the meeting as constructive but said important work remained and that trilateral talks between the United States, Russia and Ukraine at the technical level would follow. The Kremlin said it had agreed in principle to those talks, which would focus on how to guarantee the security of Ukraine and Russia once the war ended. El Salvador has initiated a military operation to rescue four Salvadoran soldiers abducted by gangs in Haiti, President Nayib Bukele announced in a post on X on October 21, 2026. Bukele warned that a more forceful response was coming if the personnel were not released alive and well, writing that El Salvador had already finished with the gangs at home and could do the same elsewhere. The four men are aviation technicians with the United Nations-backed Gang Suppression Force and have been missing since they fled a burning armoured vehicle in the Santo area of Croix-des-Bouquets in Port-au-Prince. Colombian President Abelardo de la Espriella announced that he is spearheading a cultural counterrevolution that includes removing dozens of exhibits from the National Museum, a step reported on October 22, 2026. He said a week earlier that he wants to prevent cultural institutions from being taken over by what he calls atheist social communism. Exhibits that addressed the history of social movements, including feminist and LGBTQ activism, and Colombia's political violence have since been taken down. Dozens of demonstrators gathered on October 21, 2026 outside the National Museum in downtown Bogota as riot police guarded its entrance, with civil rights groups, artists and students warning that the removals could erase parts of the country's history.

The Gambia will use funds received from the United States from the forfeiture of former ruler Yahya Jammeh's property to pay victims of his rule, authorities said in a report of October 21, 2026. The Gambia's Reparations Commission said it had received 2.5 million dollars from the sale of a mansion in Maryland that was owned by the former leader of the West African nation. The United States had in 2022 secured the right to sell the property on the grounds that it was acquired through criminal proceeds and misappropriated Gambian public funds.
