Background
Alappuzha is the smallest district of Kerala and is a sandy strip of land intercepted by lagoons, rivers and canals.
It is the only district in Kerala where there is no high land and no forest area.
The district has a contiguous coastline of 82 Km, and 80% of it lies in the coastal region with the rest in the midland.
Water bodies make up 13% of the district, and the Kuttanad area lies below sea level.
The average rainfall in the district is 2763 mm, recorded through 8 rain gauge stations.
Kuttanad, the rice bowl of Kerala, lies here, and the present town owes its existence to Diwan Rajakesavadas in the second half of the 18th century.
The district administration records that the sobriquet “the Venice of the East” for the place came from a visit by Lord Curzon, then Viceroy of the Indian Empire.

The Press Information Bureau records that the Rubber Board is a statutory body constituted under the Rubber Act, 1947, for the overall development of the rubber industry in India and functioning under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India. The National Institute for Rubber Training and the Rubber Research Institute of India, both at Kottayam in Kerala, function under the aegis of the Rubber Board. The research institute's work was described as covering scientific breeding programmes, biotechnology interventions and disease management strategies to raise productivity and quality. It holds the International Hevea Clone Museum, which serves as a repository of advanced genetic resources, and India is a signatory to the international clone exchange programme. The release states that the Bharath Sustainable Natural Rubber platform has been launched to ensure legality and traceability across the rubber value chain. The Board's Executive Director told a visiting press delegation that a major share of domestic rubber production is consumed by the tyre industry, and that the Board has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Himalayan Forest Research Institute to begin experimental trials at feasible locations across different agro-climatic zones.

The Food and Agriculture Organization's Global Information and Early Warning System country brief on Myanmar sets out a two-crop paddy calendar. Harvesting of the main paddy crop, which accounts for about 80 percent of annual production, is expected to begin at the end of October. The secondary paddy crop, which accounts for about 20 percent of total annual production, will be planted from October onwards. The main crop is grown on the rains: the brief tracks the June to October monsoon season, whose timing and volume decide the size of the larger harvest. The brief reports crop conditions by administrative unit, naming Rakhine State, Sagaing and Ayeyarwady Region - an illustration of Myanmar's two-name administrative structure, in which the first-order units are called States and Regions.
Share from the main paddy crop:
about 80 percent of annual production
Share from the secondary paddy crop:
about 20 percent of total annual production
Monsoon season:
June to October
Why it matters for exams: Rice is the fact examiners reach for on Myanmar's economy, and the two-crop split with the monsoon crop dominant explains why a weak monsoon there moves regional rice prices.

The district administration describes Kinnaur as lying in the northeast corner of Himachal Pradesh, with Tibet to the east, about 235 kms from Shimla.
The district has the three high mountains ranges Zanskar, Greater Himalayas and Dhauladhar, enclosing the valleys of Sutlej, Spiti, Baspa and their tributaries.
The old Hindustan-Tibet road passes through the Kinnaur valley along the bank of river Sutlej and finally enters Tibet at Shipki La Pass.
The administration records that a Shivlinga lies at the peak of the Kinner Kailash mountain, and that in ancient mythology the people of Kinnaur are known as Kinners, halfway between men and gods.
The administration records that the apples, chilgoza and other dry fruits grown here are world famous, and that the beautiful district was opened for the outsiders in 1989.

The Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations that leads international efforts to defeat hunger. Its stated goal is to achieve food security for all and to make sure that people have regular access to enough high-quality food to lead active, healthy lives. FAO has 194 members - 193 countries and the European Union - and it works in over 130 countries worldwide. The European Union is therefore a member in its own right, alongside the member countries. The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) was established by the Government of India under the Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority Act passed by the Parliament in December, 1985. The Act, numbered 2 of 1986, came into effect from 13th February, 1986 by a notification in the Gazette of India. The Authority replaced the Processed Food Export Promotion Council (PFEPC).
Its assigned functions include registration of persons as exporters of the scheduled products, fixing of standards and specifications for the scheduled products for the purpose of exports, carrying out inspection of meat and meat products, and improving the packaging and the marketing of the scheduled products outside India.
The scheduled products run from fruits, vegetables, meat, poultry and dairy to honey, cereals, groundnuts, guar gum, floriculture and cashew nuts. Basmati Rice has been included in the Second Schedule of APEDA Act, and the Authority has also been entrusted with monitoring the import of sugar.
As prescribed by the statute the Authority consists of a Chairman, appointed by the Central Government; the Agricultural Marketing Advisor to the Government of India, ex-officio; one member representing the Niti Aayog; and eight members representing Central Government ministries. Three members of Parliament of whom two are elected by the House of People and one by the Council of States also sit on the Authority.
APEDA also functions as the Secretariat to the National Accreditation Board (NAB) for accreditation of the certification bodies under the National Programme for Organic Production (NPOP), under which products for export must be produced, processed and packed to be certified as organic.

The Local Self Government Department lists Kudumbashree among its Allied Institutions, and its page records that Kudumbashree was launched in 1998 as a community network that would work in tandem with local self governments for poverty eradication and woman empowerment.
The department traces the idea to the early nineties, when a community led Poverty Identification Format was developed as part of the Alappuzha Urban Basic Services for the Poor Programme.
By that time, the page says, the NABARD promoted Self Help Groups and linkage banking program had established itself as a viable microfinance model.
In 1994, the Community Based Nutrition project of Malappuram tried to assimilate these experiences and develop a woman based community structure for service delivery of government programs.
The page credits the 73rd and the 74th amendments to the Constitution with strengthening Panchayati Raj Institutes and Urban Local Bodies.
Shortly afterwards, it says, the People's Plan Campaign for decentralized Governance created strong local self governments, the panchayats and municipalities, in the State, and Kudumbashree was launched to work with them.

In a federation the powers and functions of government are divided between two governments; in India these are the Union Government and the various State Governments.
