Nobel Prize in Physics 2026 goes to Francis Halzen for IceCube neutrino discoveries

The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announced the Nobel Prize in Physics 2026 on 6 October 2026.
It goes to Francis Halzen of the University of Wisconsin–Madison, USA, "for decisive contributions to the IceCube Neutrino Observatory and the discovery of high-energy neutrinos of astrophysical origin".
Halzen first presented his vision for capturing neutrinos at the South Pole in 1988. IceCube covers a cubic kilometre of ice and was finished in 2011.
When a neutrino collides with an atomic nucleus it produces a flash of light, which sensors in the clear glacial ice can track.
Halzen was born in 1944 in Tienen, Belgium. The prize amount is 12 million Swedish kronor.

The Montreal Protocol has been amended six times, and the Kigali Amendment added a phase-down of hydrofluorocarbons

The Montreal Protocol on Substances that Deplete the Ozone Layer is a global agreement to protect the ozone layer by phasing out the chemicals that deplete it.
The phase-out plan covers both the production and the consumption of ozone-depleting substances.
The agreement was signed in 1987 and entered into force in 1989.
The parties meet once a year to take decisions on implementation, including adjusting or amending the Protocol, which has been done six times.
The most recent amendment is the Kigali Amendment, which called for the phase-down of hydrofluorocarbons in 2016.
HFCs had come in as replacements for ozone-depleting substances eliminated by the original Protocol; they do not deplete the ozone layer but are powerful greenhouse gases.

Times the Protocol has been adjusted or amended: Six Meetings of the parties: Once a year Most recent amendment: The Kigali Amendment

High Court of Meghalaya designates a single Virtual Court for traffic eChallan cases across the State

The High Court of Meghalaya issued a notification dated 7 October 2026 designating the court of Shri Flavian R Marak, Judicial Magistrate First Class, as a Virtual Court for traffic eChallan cases in the State of Meghalaya.
The designation takes effect immediately and holds until further orders.
The jurisdiction stated in the notification is the whole State of Meghalaya, so traffic eChallan matters go to one designated virtual court rather than being taken up court by court.
The notification is issued by order of the Chief Justice and is in supersession of the Registry's earlier notification of 6 October 2021, which had designated a different magistrate's court for this purpose.
A virtual court lets a person pay the fine or contest the challan online without a physical appearance.

The Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale rates only wind speed, and leaves out surge, flooding and tornadoes

Hurricane Isaias came ashore on the United States Gulf coast on 9 October 2026 as a category 2 storm, a rating given on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale, so the scale itself is worth knowing. The National Hurricane Center describes the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Wind Scale as a 1 to 5 rating based only on a hurricane's maximum sustained wind speed. This scale does not take into account other potentially deadly hazards such as storm surge, rainfall flooding, and tornadoes. The scale estimates potential property damage. While all hurricanes produce life-threatening winds, hurricanes rated Category 3 and higher are known as major hurricanes, which can cause devastating to catastrophic wind damage and significant loss of life. Hurricanes of all categories can produce deadly storm surge, rain-induced floods, and tornadoes, and these hazards require people to take protective action, including evacuating from areas vulnerable to storm surge. In the western North Pacific, the term super typhoon is used for tropical cyclones with sustained winds exceeding 150 mph.

Scale range: 1 to 5 Major hurricane threshold: Category 3 and higher Super typhoon, western North Pacific: sustained winds exceeding 150 mph
Why it matters for exams: Examiners ask what the hurricane category measures and what it leaves out, and the major hurricane threshold is a one-line fact.

Kerala Police to strengthen Cyberdome; indigenous robots Daksha, Kavach and Thara readied with iHub Robotics

Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala inaugurated the nineteenth edition of the Cocon security and hacking conference and said Kerala Police will strengthen its Cyberdome to meet cyber threats. He said government, police, researchers, technical institutions and the private sector must work together, and stressed data protection, personal privacy and lawful, responsible security systems as the use of artificial intelligence grows. Kerala Police, working with iHub Robotics, has readied indigenously developed robots for traffic control, disaster management, rescue and industrial automation. Kerala Police signed a memorandum of understanding with the Kochi-based company at the conference; trials are to begin shortly, and the robots go into the field after a pilot run in coordination with Cyberdome. Daksha is designed for traffic control. Kavach assists rescue work in difficult terrain and delivers essential supplies. Thara gives information in several languages and guides visitors. The stated aim is to reduce the burden on police personnel who stand for hours in sun and rain and to make policing more efficient. The government will also train cyber security officials, run public awareness work and strengthen international cooperation and public-private partnerships. Deputy National Security Adviser T. V. Ravichandran, Challa Srinivasulu Shetty and Directors General of Police Ravada Chandrasekhar and Manoj Abraham attended.

Nature paper converts subword language models into byte-level models for under one per cent of pretraining cost

A paper published in Nature on 7 October 2026 sets out 'byteification', a two-stage procedure that retrofits existing subword-based large language models into byte-level models. The authors report doing this with 49.1 billion tokens in all, under one per cent of a typical pretraining budget. They build Bolmo 7B and Bolmo 1B from Olmo 3 7B and OLMo 2 1B, Bwen 8B from Qwen3 8B Base, and Blama 8B from Llama 3 8B. Bolmo 7B gains 16.5 percentage points on STEM tasks over BLT 7B, a byte-level model trained from random initialisation. The byteified models substantially outperform their own source models on character-level tasks. Unlike earlier latent-tokeniser designs, the boundary predictor uses one byte of future context, which better matches how subword tokenisers place boundaries.

Magnitude 7.7 earthquake strikes south-central Panama and damages buildings

A magnitude 7.7 earthquake struck south-central Panama just before 15:00 local time (20:00 GMT) on 9 October 2026. The US Geological Survey put the epicentre about 10km (6.2 miles) from the town of Pitaloza Arriba, and the quake was registered as occurring at a depth of just 12km. About 4.6 million people felt moderate to severe tremors, according to the USGS, which said the effects of the quake were likely to be widespread. One side of a cathedral in Penonome collapsed along with one of its spires, buildings were damaged in Penonome and Sona, and many people were evacuated from buildings in Panama City, about 200km from the epicentre. Panama's President Jose Raul Mulino said his entire government was mobilising in response to the earthquake. Tsunami warnings were initially issued for 11 countries neighbouring Panama before the US Tsunami Warning System confirmed there was no threat. The Panama Canal was unaffected, the authority that oversees marine traffic through it said. No casualties had been reported at the time of the reports.
