Anthropic commits 5 per cent of its shares to a new public benefit fund

Anthropic, the company that makes the Claude artificial intelligence assistant, announced on Sunday 18 October 2026 that it is committing 5 per cent of its shares to a new Anthropic Public Benefit Fund, subject to stockholder approval. A further 2 per cent may be added at the board's discretion for every 50 per cent increase in the company's value. The company said the fund may be used for large donations to traditional nonprofits and for direct distributions to specific populations, and that it will not be used for lobbying or political donations in the United States or overseas. Anthropic said it has already committed $200 million to studying and addressing labour market issues and that bolder approaches may be needed given the pace of artificial intelligence progress. It is a public benefit corporation based in San Francisco and registered in Delaware, founded in 2021, and is expected to list on the United States stock market before the end of 2026.

Shares committed: 5 per cent Further addition: 2 per cent for every 50 per cent rise in value Already committed to labour market work: $200 million Founded: 2021
Why it matters for exams: Public benefit corporations and the governance of artificial intelligence firms are new but increasingly asked economy topics.
