Greek parliament passes a law banning social media for children under 15 from 1 January 2027

The Greek parliament on 23 October 2026 passed a law banning the use of social media by people under the age of 15.
The law comes into effect on 1 January 2027 and will require age verification on social networks, with penalties for companies that do not comply.
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis's New Democracy party passed the bill with its majority; no other party backed it.
The opposition PASOK party abstained after proposing an alternative ban for under-13s.
Mitsotakis had announced the plan in April 2026.
Greece joins about 20 countries, including Australia, France and Denmark, that restrict or plan to restrict social media for young people.

Age limit: Under 15 In force from: 1 January 2027 Prime Minister: Kyriakos Mitsotakis
Why it matters for exams: Age limits for social media are spreading across countries; the age threshold and start date are likely questions.
