Musk says he will give one SpaceX share to every child in the United States next year

Elon Musk said in a post on X on 19 October 2026 that he will give one of his SpaceX shares to every child in the United States next year, calling it the first of many. He has not said who will qualify, how the shares will be distributed, how they will be taxed or whether there will be restrictions. Musk founded SpaceX in March 2002 and holds a 48.4 per cent stake, about 6.42 billion shares. The announcement came a day after Anthropic said it would commit 5 per cent of its shares to a public benefit fund, and Musk said he recommends giving shares directly to the public and that this is what he will be doing. Bloomberg noted that Musk has a history of high-profile pledges he has not followed through on, citing his 2021 challenge to the World Food Programme over a $6 billion hunger plan.
