The UN migration agency (IOM) said on 11 October 2026 that at least 139 migrants had died after their boat capsized off Djibouti, with 84 people still missing. The toll rose from 109 after the bodies of 30 more people were recovered. The boat was carrying 305 people from Djibouti towards Yemen when it went down near Guehere, north of Obock. Lancet Commission lists 17 major threats to human health and warns nuclear conflict and malicious AI carry extinction risk

The Lancet Commission on 21st Century Global Threats to Health has identified 17 major threats to human health over the next 75 years. It said malicious use of AI, including bioweapons, and nuclear conflict with nuclear famine carry risks of extinction, though their likelihood remains low. Other threats include air pollution, antimicrobial resistance, childhood malnutrition, climate breakdown and declining overseas aid. The commission measured each threat in disability-adjusted life years (DALYs). Limiting global heating to about 1.8C rather than 4.4C could prevent 1.89bn years of healthy life being lost. Prof Christopher Murray, director of the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, co-chairs the commission, whose findings were to be shared at the World Health Summit in Berlin on Sunday, 11 October 2026.

International Day of the Girl 2026 calls for an end to child marriage and investment in girls' rights

The International Day of the Girl was observed on 11 October 2026 with the theme of ending child marriage and investing in girls' rights. The UN said the theme was developed through consultations with girls, girls' organisations and girl-led networks. Each year more than 12 million girls, roughly one every three seconds, are married before reaching adulthood, with the highest prevalence in sub-Saharan Africa (31 per cent). An estimated 68 million child marriages have been averted over the past 25 years through investment in girls' education, legal reform and social protection. UN Women said one in five girls globally is married before the age of 18.

US Justice Department opens an antitrust investigation into TV networks that halted coverage of President Trump

The US Department of Justice said on 10 October 2026 that its Antitrust Division was investigating whether television networks violated antitrust laws by halting coverage of President Donald Trump last month. The five networks of the White House television pool are ABC, CBS, CNN, Fox and NBC. They stopped presidential coverage after the White House barred reporters from CNN, MS Now and Politico on 19 September. A department spokesperson said group boycotts among commercial competitors can violate the Sherman Act. The White House reinstated the credentials on 24 September after US District Judge Timothy Kelly ruled that the ban was likely unconstitutional.

UN News: Mekong Delta farmers adapt to saltwater intrusion as sediment reaching the delta falls to an estimated 32 million tons

A UN News report published on 10 October 2026 examined how farmers in the Mekong Delta of Viet Nam are adapting as saltwater reaches farther inland. Upstream dams have trapped much of the sediment that once replenished the delta. According to a 2021 scientific study, sediment reaching the delta has plummeted from roughly 143 million metric tons two decades ago to an estimated 32 million tons. In An Giang Province, rice-shrimp farming, alternating rice with brackish-water shrimp, now covers more than 100,000 hectares of saltwater-affected land. Jack O’Connor, a marine ecologist at the United Nations University's Institute for Environment and Human Security (UNU-EHS) in Bonn, said adaptation needs collective effort beyond individual farmers.

Rehabilitated agropastoral dam at Torla eases herder-farmer conflict in northern Côte d'Ivoire, UN News reports

A UN News report of 10 October 2026 described how a rehabilitated agropastoral dam at Torla village in northern Côte d'Ivoire is reducing conflict between herders and farmers. In the dry season, herders pushing cattle through cultivated fields in search of water and pasture had led to disputes with farmers. The dam, completed in August, holds more water and releases it more reliably through the dry months for livestock and irrigation. It is managed locally by the community and supported by the International Organization for Migration (IOM), the UN Peacebuilding Fund and partners. Adam Ouattara, who has led the local herders association since 2021, said there are fewer conflicts.
