Fifty-four tea gardens and 2,800 small growers: the size of Tripura's tea industry

Tripura's new tea auction centre serves an industry that the Tripura Tea Development Corporation Limited counts at 54 tea gardens, held by the government, by private owners and by cooperative societies.
Beside them the State has about 2,800 small tea growers.
Made tea output is put at 8 to 9 million kilograms a year, along with roughly 45 million kilograms of green tea leaf.
Tripura is the fifth largest tea producing State in India, after West Bengal, Assam, Tamil Nadu and Kerala.
A tea auction centre is the place where lots of made tea are graded, tasted and sold to the highest bidder, and that is how most Indian tea reaches buyers.
Setting up an auction centre inside the State had been listed by the Corporation as one of its aims, which is what the Agartala centre now answers.

Tea gardens: 54 Small growers: 2,800 Made tea output: 8-9 million kgs Rank in India: 5th largest producer
Why it matters for exams: Tripura's 54 tea gardens, its 2,800 small growers and its place as India's fifth largest tea producing State are the figures an examiner can ask about the State's tea sector.
